The topology of signals

Abstract:

Topology is a branch of mathematics that focuses on the qualitative study of shapes. In recent years, the field of applied topology has been emerging, proposing tools for network and data-analysis that use topological methods.

In the study of signal processing and dynamical systems, a common practice is to translate temporal signals into spatial point-clouds, and study their shape. Previous work showed that the topology of such point-clouds can detect periodic patterns in the original signal. In this project, we want to study the full extent of what the “topology of signals” can tell us about the underlying system.
